What happens to transparency when I convert to JPG?

JPG has no transparency, so see-through areas are filled with white. If you need the transparency kept — logos, cut-outs, overlays — convert to PNG or WebP instead, both of which preserve it.

Which format should I choose?

JPG is the safe choice for photos and maximum compatibility. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, best for screenshots, logos and graphics with text. WebP does nearly everything well at smaller sizes, and every modern browser supports it — its only weakness is some older desktop software.

Does converting lose quality?

Converting to PNG is lossless. Converting to JPG or WebP re-encodes the image at the quality you choose — at the high setting the difference is rarely visible. Files already in the target format are passed through byte-for-byte rather than re-encoded, so nothing is lost to a pointless round trip.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion is performed by your browser on your own device, so the images never travel over the network. You can even load the page, go offline, and still convert.
