Phone photos are routinely three to eight megabytes, which is far more than an email limit, an upload form or a web page needs. These tools shrink, resize and convert images using your browser's own image engine, so nothing is uploaded and there is no waiting for a transfer. They are also honest about their limits: compression never hands back a file bigger than the one you gave it, and resizing never enlarges an image, because that only adds blur.
