A fuel cost calculator works out what a trip will cost in fuel and splits it between passengers. It works in whichever convention you drive by — kilometres, litres and km per litre; or miles, gallons and MPG — and it keeps US and imperial gallons apart, because they differ by a fifth and a calculator that blurs them is quietly wrong for one of its audiences. The units start on your region's and remember whatever you choose. Everything runs on your device.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I find my vehicle's real mileage?
- Fill the tank completely, reset the trip meter, drive normally until you refuel, then divide the kilometres travelled by the litres it took to fill up again. Repeating this over a few tanks gives a far more honest figure than the manufacturer's claim.
- Should I use highway or city mileage?
- Use whichever matches your trip. City driving with stop-start traffic typically returns noticeably lower mileage than steady highway cruising, so a mixed trip sits between the two. When in doubt, use the lower figure and be pleasantly surprised.
- How do I split a round trip fairly?
- Enter the full round-trip distance, not one way, then set the number of people. If some passengers only travel part of the way, calculate each leg separately and divide each by the people actually in the car for it.
- Does AC use change the cost much?
- Yes, meaningfully — air conditioning can reduce mileage by roughly 5–20% depending on conditions. If you'll be running it constantly in heat, enter a slightly lower mileage figure to keep the estimate realistic.
- Is a US gallon the same as a UK gallon?
- No, and the gap is large enough to matter. A US gallon is 3.785 litres; an imperial gallon, still used for quoting fuel economy in Britain, is 4.546 — about 20 per cent bigger. The same car therefore scores a higher MPG figure in Britain than in America without being any more efficient. That is why this calculator asks which one you mean rather than offering a single unlabelled gallon.
