A date difference calculator counts the days between two dates, and also breaks the gap into years, months, and days plus full weeks. Enter the dates in either order — it handles reversed input automatically. Leap years and the varying lengths of months are accounted for, so the total is exact rather than an approximation from a 365-day year. The dates are read as whole calendar days with no time of day and no time zone involved, which is what you want for contracts, notice periods and visa spans: the answer does not change depending on where the person reading it happens to be sitting.   • 28 February 2024 to 1 March 2024 → 2 days; the 29th is a real day and is counted as one.

Frequently asked questions

Does the count include both start and end dates?
The total-days figure is the gap between the dates, so 1 July to 2 July is 1 day. If you need both endpoints counted — as leave applications usually do — add one, or use the working days calculator, which counts inclusively.
How are leap years handled?
Automatically. Any 29 February inside your range is counted as a real day, so spans crossing leap years are exact. This matters for long ranges, where an approximate 365-day year would drift.
Can I count working days only?
Not with this tool — it counts every calendar day. Use the working days calculator instead: it counts weekdays only and lets you subtract public holidays.
Why do months vary in the breakdown?
Because real months are 28 to 31 days long. The years-months-days breakdown steps through actual calendar months from the start date rather than assuming a fixed length, which is why the same number of total days can give different breakdowns depending on where in the year it falls. Month arithmetic also has no clean answer at the end of a month — a span starting on the 31st has no matching day to land on in a 30-day month — so every calculator has to choose a convention there. For anything that has to hold up in a contract, quote the total-days figure: it is unambiguous however you slice it.
Should I count inclusively or exclusively?
It depends what the days are for, and getting it wrong is a one-day error that costs real money. This tool reports the gap, so 1 July to 2 July is 1 day. That is right for anything measured in nights: a hotel stay, a hire period, interest accruing overnight. Leave applications, notice periods and rent are normally counted inclusively, because the first and the last day both belong to you, so add one. Where a contract says 'within 30 days', check whether the clock starts on the day of the event or the day after — both readings are common and they differ by a day.
Does the time of day or my time zone change the answer?
No. Both dates are read as whole calendar dates and compared in UTC, so there is no time component to round and no daylight-saving hour to lose. Two people in different countries entering the same two dates get the same number, which is the behaviour you want for a deadline agreed across borders. It does mean the tool cannot answer questions about hours between two moments — a time duration calculator is the right tool for that.
Why is a year sometimes 365 days and sometimes 366?
Because a calendar year is not a fixed length. From 1 March 2023 to 1 March 2024 is 366 days, since 29 February 2024 sits inside it; from 1 March 2024 to 1 March 2025 is 365. Both are one year in the years-months-days breakdown, and both are correct. If you are working out interest, a penalty, or anything charged per day, use the total-days figure rather than multiplying a number of years by 365.
