Frequently asked questions
- How many calories does walking 1 km actually burn?
- Roughly half a calorie per kilogram of body weight per kilometre, so a 70 kg person burns about 35 calories per km. That is the net figure — the energy spent above what the body would have burned sitting still. Many calculators quote the gross number, which is nearly twice as high and quietly flatters the result, because it counts calories you would have burned anyway.
- Why does cutting sugar do so much of the work?
- Because eating less is far more efficient than moving more. Fifty grams of added sugar is 200 calories that take seconds to consume and, for an 80 kg person, five kilometres of walking to burn off. That asymmetry is the single most useful thing this calculator shows: diet sets the size of the job, and walking finishes it.
- Why does the distance look so long?
- Because the arithmetic is honest. A half-kilo of fat a week needs a deficit of about 550 calories a day, and walking is a low-intensity activity, so covering the remainder on foot takes real time. If the number is not realistic for your day, the better lever is a bigger dietary change, a slower target, or splitting the walk into two or three shorter ones — not a calculator that quietly inflates the burn.
- Will I really lose the weight in that many weeks?
- Treat it as a best case. The timeline uses the standard 7,700 calories per kilogram of fat, which assumes loss stays linear. In reality a lighter body burns less, appetite tends to rise, and progress slows — so most people take longer than the straight-line estimate. It is a direction of travel, not a promise.
- Does walking faster burn more per kilometre?
- Barely. The energy cost of covering a kilometre on level ground is mostly set by your body weight, not your speed, so walking faster mainly means finishing the same distance sooner. What does raise the cost is hills, stairs, soft ground or carrying weight — a route with slopes burns meaningfully more than the same distance on the flat.
