An ideal weight calculator gives a target weight for your height using the Devine formula, alongside the healthy weight range that corresponds to a normal BMI. Showing both matters: a single 'ideal' number is a rough clinical benchmark, while the range reflects that healthy bodies genuinely vary. Use it as orientation, not a verdict. It runs entirely on your device.
How to use it
- Enter your height and select your sex.
- See the Devine formula's ideal weight figure.
- Compare it with the healthy BMI range shown beneath.
Examples
- Male, 175 cm → 70.46 kg ideal, with a healthy range of 56.66–76.26 kg.
- The range is wider than the single figure for good reason.
Frequently asked questions
- What formula does this use?
- The Devine formula, originally developed in the 1970s for calculating medication doses. It starts from a base weight and adds a fixed amount per inch of height above five feet, with different bases for men and women.
- Is one ideal weight realistic for everyone?
- No. The formula ignores frame size, muscle mass, age, and body composition. Two healthy people of the same height can sit several kilos apart, which is exactly why we show a range alongside the single figure.
- Why show a range as well as one number?
- Because the range — derived from the normal BMI band of 18.5 to 24.9 — is more honest. Anywhere inside it is generally considered a healthy weight for your height, and that's more useful than chasing one exact number.
- Does muscle mass change my ideal weight?
- Considerably. Muscle is denser than fat, so a well-trained person can weigh well above these figures while being very healthy. If you train seriously, body-fat percentage is a far better measure than weight alone.
