Carpet comes on a roll of fixed width, which makes it unlike tiles or planks: the roll width, not just the room area, decides how much you must buy. This calculator gives the area, the quantity to order with wastage, and an estimated cost — with the roll-width trap explained, since it is the single most common reason a carpet order comes up short.

Frequently asked questions
- How much carpet do I need?
- The floor area plus an allowance for trimming — around ten per cent for a simple room. If the carpet must run in one piece and the room is wider than the roll, the practical requirement can be much higher, because the offcut from a wider roll is often unusable.
- Why does carpet width matter so much?
- Carpet is made in fixed widths, commonly 3.66 m or 4 m. A room narrower than the roll takes a single piece with a strip wasted down one side. A room wider than the roll needs a seam, and fitters position seams away from doorways and light, which can force a less efficient cut. Always give the fitter the room dimensions, not just the area.
- Should I allow for pattern matching?
- Yes, if the carpet has a repeating pattern. Each piece must start at the same point in the pattern, so the wastage rises with the size of the repeat — much like wallpaper. Ask for the repeat length and add it to your allowance.
- Is underlay included in this estimate?
- No. The figure is carpet only. Underlay is bought separately by area, usually costs a fraction of the carpet, and materially affects how the floor feels and how long the carpet lasts — it is not the place to economise.
